Just stumbled across this in a local shop and picked it up - anyone else got it? Like it? Here's my mini-review:
Soft Cell at the BBC:
1. Bedsitter
2. Chips on My Shoulder
3. Seedy Films
4. Youth
5. Entertain Me
6. Soul Inside
7. Her Imagination
8. Where was Your Heart When You Needed It Most?
Videos - live on The Old Grey Whistle Test
1. Youth
2. Sex Dwarf
Overall the sound quality is really good. These are studio recordings, not concert tracks. Decent liner notes with no new info from Dave Stubbs.
1-4 are recorded on July 26, 1981. They have a harsher, more electro feel to them that I really like - closer to the Australian demos / Tainted Love / Memorabilia / Girl with the Patent Leather Face, less like the Mike Thorne production on Non-Stop.... The arrangements are also a little different, which is interesting. More random synth noises and over-the-top Marc background vocal effects. Viscious Pink Phenomena are there (!!) but only predominant on Entertain Me (with some different lyrics) and Seedy Films. (Fifi does Cindy Ecstasy's part, also with some different lyrics from those on the album or Aussie demo.) Youth sounds most like the original.
6-8 are from June 1, 1983 and Viscious Pink Phenom get credit but aren't there. (Can you imagine them backing Soul Inside?!) Soul Inside is sort of the single version with a long outro, but definitely not the 12" version. It has a heavier beat and stronger piano line, and some different background vocals/effects. Marc's in good voice. Her Imagination is the same recording as on the U.S. Soul Inside 12", etc. but sounds clearer and sharper to me. Where Was... is a pretty different piano / synth version, not nearly as guitar-crunchy as the album version. Has a longer instrumental bridges and a fadeout ending.
The TV clips are from April 2, 1982. They're entertaining - just Marc and Dave on stage with flashing lights, but I'd never seen them before, so a nice addition to fill out the disc. Youth sounds to me like the same version as on the Pink Culture bootleg. Sex Dwarf is fun but no substitute for the lost music video! ;-)
Overall this was better than I expected - the good sound quality and alternate arrangements of the songs definitely made it a worthwhile.
